Role Overview

As a Backend Software Engineer at Glean, you will architect and refine robust cloud-native infrastructure capable of handling large-scale enterprise data with real-time performance. You will be responsible for creating permission-aware systems, resilient distributed data layers, and streamlined backend frameworks. This role requires solving complex architectural challenges around latency, security, and cloud deployment efficiency. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will empower global organizations to seamlessly interact with their institutional knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

Design and deploy scalable backend systems and distributed storage solutions with high performance standards. Lead technical initiatives from preliminary architectural concepts through to production execution. Write clear technical design documentation and deliver robust, well-tested production code. Collaborate with engineering leadership to prioritize key projects on the technical product roadmap. Optimize systems for minimal latency and cost efficiency across distributed cloud environments. Provide mentorship to junior team members while fostering engineering excellence and operational best practices.

Qualifications & Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field. At least 6 years of hands-on software development experience building cloud-native infrastructure or distributed systems. Demonstrated proficiency in core backend programming languages such as Go, Python, Java, or C++. Strong track record of designing for system stability, high scalability, and automated testing. Proven experience working effectively within cross-functional, customer-focused team structures. Solid understanding of modern cloud platform environments and infrastructure management.

Must-Have Non-Negotiables

• 6+ years of backend engineering experience in distributed systems • Strong coding proficiency in Go, Java, Python, or C++ • Expertise in designing low-latency, high-scale software architectures • BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline • Track record of writing resilient, thoroughly tested software

Nice-to-Have Skills & Bonus Qualifications

• Direct experience with public cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS, or Azure • Familiarity with containerization and modern cloud-native practices • Background in building security-conscious and permissions-aware enterprise tools
